You Can’t Stop The Conversation

If you were like me, you took some time off last week from many of your regular activities.  Of course, given the way things work these days, engaging with your friends via social media probably wasn’t one of them.  Which raises a question (the answer to which is forthcoming!): how do businesses maintain their social media presence during down time?  After all, as I tell my clients, social media is not a “set it and forget it operation.  It requires constant monitoring and support if you are going to participate with your customers (or fans) – they expect their friends to converse and so must you.

More Access, Less Time

I don’t know about you, but I can’t keep up with all of the great content that’s out there.  I was reminded of that this morning as yet another podcast installed itself along side the other 15 hours of stuff I haven’t listened to yet.  Those go along with the backlog of magazines I love but haven’t read (oh look, the summer grilling issue is out!), the TV shows lingering on my DVR (don’t tell me if Nucky is in jail yet), and the books stacked up like planes over LaGuardia.  Which is why I find the data from eMarketer on tablets and smartphones disturbing. Burp Then Buy!

I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving feasts. apparently, a lot of folks ate and ran for their cars – not to get home before Aunt Sally passed out but to the stores to get a head start on their shopping for the next holidays. I was really surprised about how the Thanksgiving Day newspaper had several pounds worth of ads, in many cases for sales that would be over before many of us were getting out of bed on Friday.
One mistake anyone commenting on things can make is to assume that the way in which we see the world is the norm, and so while I’d never ponder running to a store to try to be one of the lucky 10 people who actually can get the $2 waffle iron (hopefully without a dose of pepper spray as occurred in some places), I know others do.  But while retail sales were up vs. a year ago, comScore reported something interesting occurring over the weekend.
