I have an Android phone and I have quite a few apps on it. If you use apps on a smart phone, inevitably you get prompted that there are updates available. Sometimes, these updates provide real functionality changes or fix a bug. A lot of the time, I’m finding that the changes are very minor – a color change, the screen layout – and the update is more annoying than necessary. It reminded me of a post I wrote way back in 2008 on the subject of leaving well enough alone and I want to touch on that again. Looking Past Preconceptions
Let’s play a little marketing game this morning. I’ll throw out a series of facts and you put on your marketing hat and decide if the facts make you want to target this group. The point I’m going to make is that the answers may surprise you, not because you will find them unbelievable but because I’m betting that you have some preconceptions which will skew your thinking. As we’ve discussed before, I think that is a huge problem in business (and in life and political thought as well!).

Instant Replay
I was watching the Chicago Bears play the Detroit Lions last night. I’m not sure if you watched, but the first quarter of the game was a mess – lots of penalties and a couple of challenges to rulings on the field using instant replay. I flashed back to when the NFL put in the current replay system. Some of us at the networks were a little concerned that suddenly what we were doing could become part of the game instead of us just covering what was happening since they use TV coverage to look at the calls. The concern was about a missed camera angle or a technical problem changing the outcome.
That hasn’t been an issue for the most part, and the replay system has been a good thing in my mind. After all, events move very fast on the field and it’s not always easy to get it right all the time. Sound like your work day? It does to me, and it raises a thought. Continue reading
