Taking The Tablet

There is an excellent, thought-provoking article in the current edition of the Sports Business Journal about tablet computers.  The piece examines what effects the popularity of these devices have been across a number of sectors in the sports business.  Sponsor rights, media distribution, and on-field use are just a few of the areas in which tablets are having an impact.  Disruptive doesn’t begin to describe it.

One thing I did notice as the article ran through the issues (which I’ll discuss in a minute) is that the way in which many of the parties involved have tried to deal with this new round peg is to try to fit it in the same square holes as other things without much success.  Let me explain. Stasis

I have an Android phone and I have quite a few apps on it.  If you use apps on a smart phone, inevitably you get prompted that there are updates available.  Sometimes, these updates provide real functionality changes or fix a bug.  A lot of the time, I’m finding that the changes are very minor – a color change, the screen layout – and the update is more annoying than necessary.  It reminded me of a post I wrote way back in 2008 on the subject of leaving well enough alone and I want to touch on that again.  Given some of what’s been going on in the tech world of late, I think it bears repeating. Babel

Odd places for a Microsoft Windows Crash

I’m sorry I didn’t get a post up yesterday.  The day sort of got away from me due to a death in the family.  Fortunately, it was an old PC and not a person.  Unfortunately, it was the one serving as the host for all the printing on my network.  No big deal, right?  Install the printer on another PC on the network and all is well.  Well, not so much.

The deceased machine ran an old version of Windows – the new one runs XP (which is now an old version of Windows…).  While all the Windows machines on the net can print without issue, the MacBook that’s my primary computer can’t.  Oh sure – it sees the printer, it spools to the printer, but something seems to get lost in the translation since the printer just pauses and stays there.  Which of course got me thinking about business.
