Age, Haste, and Waste

As I was searching for today’s topic, I found an article I had clipped a month ago and promptly forgot about.  I’m not sure if it’s an age-related thing but I think we’re all familiar with the expression “senior moment.”

Some of my friends have them (if I do, I must have forgotten) and they also seem to react a bit more slowly to questions as well.  That’s why I clipped the article, which comes from Scientific American and deals with a study on older folks and reaction times.  As it turns out, the fact that we take longer to make decisions as we age has nothing to do with impaired mental ability.  It also raises a business point.

What Paula Deen Teaches Us

As you may have heard, earlier this week celebrity chef Paula Deen admitted she has had type 2 diabetes for the last few years, and since she’s a food person it seemed an appropriate topic for Foodie Friday.  I’ll begin by saying that I’m sorry to hear that she has the disease.  Apparently she also has a marketing arrangement with a drug company to be a spokesperson for their diabetes drug.

More about that next week.  Today, I want to talk about some of the things she had to say this week and what they have to do with a sane approach to business.  It a horrible disease, and what she had to say is, in my mind, not much better.  But let’s see what you think.

How To Set A Goal

This is a time of the year when there is a lot of focus on what we don’t have.  How else does one make a wish list without thinking about what we’d like but don’t own?  Wishful thinking is a good thing as long as it’s grounded in reality.  I mean, your kid may want you to buy them a functioning light saber along with a robot opponent with which to joust, but light sabers don’t exist, at least not of the sort that the kid might see in the Star Wars movie.  May the force be with you as you explain that.

It’s a point we business folks need to keep in mind as well – both with respect to our wants as well as to our fears. Continue reading
