You Can’t Stop The Conversation

If you were like me, you took some time off last week from many of your regular activities.  Of course, given the way things work these days, engaging with your friends via social media probably wasn’t one of them.  Which raises a question (the answer to which is forthcoming!): how do businesses maintain their social media presence during down time?  After all, as I tell my clients, social media is not a “set it and forget it operation.  It requires constant monitoring and support if you are going to participate with your customers (or fans) – they expect their friends to converse and so must you.

What’s A Friend Worth?

Ask yourself this about your best friend:  what is he or she worth to you?  I know –  silly question.  After all, our friends don’t really have monetary value.  What they provide is measured in emotional support, perhaps a more varied perspective on the world around you, and maybe a great system of checks and balances with your own perception of you and the worlds around you.

I got to thinking about the fallacy of measuring a friend’s worth as I read an article last week on a marketing study.  In my mind, social media in many forms isn’t about the traditional measures of ROI.  After all, if the point is to engage people in conversations, much as with one’s own friends, the ROI isn’t really quantifiable in traditional terms.  But let’s see what you think. Spam Buddies

Everyone has different kinds of friends.  Work pals, sorority sisters, roommates, golf friends. Each plays a different role in our lives and some of the recent changes both in Facebook and Google+ reflect that – the notion of sharing different things with different audiences.

Lately I’ve found I have an entirely new class of friends:  spam buddies, and today’s topic is a cross between venting and asking you all how we might combat this.  I’m also of the opinion that it’s going to get worse based on the changes we’re seeing in Facebook, LinkedIn, and others.  But let’s see what you think.
