This post was written after the one of the many recent updates done by Facebook.  It was called “Failbook” and I was not happy about what they’d done. I’m not any happier now with the timeline, the news stream on the right, etc.  Are you?  Anyway, read on for a rant and a business lesson.

Unless you’re in a cave someplace or have abandoned it for Google+, you’ve probably noticed that Facebook did an overhaul last night.  I logged in this morning and while I’ll admit I’m not the brightest guy in the world, I was thoroughly confused.  Many of the new features are clearly designed to compete with things found on Google+ and Twitter, such as circles.  For those of you struggling to make sense of the new layout, Gizmodo did a nice job color-coding everything in a cheat sheet.

I’m a believer in continuous improvement.  I’m not a believer in keeping up with the Joneses.  Here’s why. Continue reading

Are Social Media Anti-Social?

Fascinating article in yesterday’s New York Times about the growing number of young people who are turning off Facebook.

When I started reading it I thought it might have to do with privacy concerns or with cyber stalking. Instead, the focus was on something near and dear to my heart and which I think is applicable to any of us in business. We’ve discussed it before and I think it’s worth discussing again.

We Want Your Opinion – Let Us Give It To You

More evidence the other day about the ongoing disconnect between brands and their customers in the social media space.  It’s always interesting how consumers say one thing and those folks at brands who are responsible for listening say something quite different when asked the same question.  Today’s evidence comes courtesy of the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Council via Econsultancy and I think it’s good for a smile, even if it’s kind of a sardonic one.  It has to do with the results of a recent study that dealt with reasons for social media interaction with brands.
