Are Deals Dumb?

As I read my daily emails from Groupon, LivingSocial, and a couple of other daily deal sites, I started thinking once again about the wisdom of these things. Not so much from a consumer perspective because, frankly, anything that saves me money is OK in my book. From a business perspective, however, there are a number of on-going questions about which there’s a lot of conflicting information. Let’s lay some of it out and get your perspective. Investing The Time

Yet another study on marketers‘ use of social media came out last week and I saw something in it I wanted to share. It’s encouraging in some ways that marketers seem to recognize that social media isn’t something that just their kids are using and that it has value as a channel. However one point made by the study shows that while the spirit may be willing, the actual flesh thrown against the social media effort is still pretty weak.  Let’s get your take. Continue reading

The Ocean

Ocean Road

There is an old Italian proverb that I don’t expect you’ve heard although you’ve probably experienced.  It goes like this:

“Tra il dire e il fare, c’è di mezzo il mare.”

For those of you who don’t speak the language, roughly translated it means “between saying and doing lies half the ocean” and like many old proverbs, this one has endured because it’s spot on.  There are lots of great ideas that have amounted to nothing because of the ocean, that vast space between saying and doing.  We need to navigate those waters or drown.
