The Beat

If you don’t know the joys of ska, you’re really missing out. I’ve been a fan since the late 1970’s and last night saw The English Beat again. The Beat are one of the original 2 Tone ska bands and although the band has changed over the years, it’s still led by Dave Wakeling and Everett Morton, their distinctive drummer. And amazingly enough, in the midst of 3 hours of dancing, I had a business thought! Continue reading

Lester William Polfus (Les Paul)

I’d be remiss if I didn’t write a few thoughts about the passing of Les Paul last week.  As someone who has been playing the guitar since he was 11, and a good many of those years playing on a Gibson ES-335, a derivative of the original Les Paul, my life was touched by Les and his work.  The most interesting thing about him, however, is how the technology he invented was always a means to an end – making great music. Woodstock

Yasgur's Farm

I was at Camp Greylock 40 years ago when a half million of “you kids” (Max Yasgur‘s term) got together and showed the world that things were changing yet again. Those of you old enough will remember how turbulent and divisive a time it was. Dr. King and Bobby and been killed, Vietnam was raging, there were frequent violent demonstrations in the streets of our country. But for three days, were saw what was possible with an open mind.
