You Can’t Buy A Swing

While I’m sure most of you aren’t as obsessed with golf as I am, I hope you managed to watch some of The Masters yesterday.  Even if you don’t like golf, it was hard not to get caught up in the excitement of Phil, Tiger, Kenny Perry, Angel, and Chad.  Watching them it was interesting to notice how different each of their swings is and it brought to mind the golf truism that “you can’t buy a swing.”  Of course, there are supermarket-sized golf stores that cater to those who believe otherwise. The reality is that a repeatable, dependable golf swing comes in many variations and is the result of years of practice.  Just like business! Continue reading

Nail It With A Shoe

I think we’ve all been in a situation where we didn’t have the right tool for the job.   Maybe you tried to hang a picture using a shoe to drive the nail rather than the hammer you wish you had.  Maybe you tried to do some delicate knife work using a 12 inch chef’s knife rather than the paring knife you needed. What’s the Diagnosis?

I was having breakfast with a friend last week and we were talking about some of the things I do as a consultant.  He was listening attentively as I rambled on about the various things I do for my clients in many different areas.   When I took a breath, he said to me “at your core, you’re a diagnostician.  You can call it a consultant, but in reality you are a business doctor, performing diagnoses.  Just as a kidney guy specializes in one area but knows about the rest, you do that with digital media but you need to know about the rest as well because like a kidney, it’s all connected.” Continue reading
