Trust

Ultimately, I think marketers can do the same for their many of their campaigns by asking exactly the same question as if they were their consumer targets.  Whom do they trust?  The answer is “not you” until you’ve earned it, and the places and ways to do that are, increasingly, via social media of some sort.  After all, eMarketer “forecasts that Facebook will have nearly 826 million users around the world this year, up from 650.7 million in 2011.”   Furthermore, a survey of US adults conducted by About.com found that 84% of respondents felt that brands needed to prove themselves trustworthy before they would interact with them or other information sources. The study found that there were 10 primary trust “elements,” or cues, that brands must establish in order to engender trust, including accuracy, expertise and transparency.  eMarketer again:

In a social media context, customers wanted to see that brands had a significant number of positive reviews, and that they didn’t go out of their way to hide the negative ones. The survey found that 41% of respondents said the ability to see reviews on social networks added to their feeling of trust in a brand. Reviews played a bigger role in cultivating trust than seeing that friends had “liked” or recommended a brand, or that the brand had accumulated a large tally of “likes.”

Friends trust their friends or friends of friends or entities that are human, particularly when they’re in review mode.  Corporeal things, not corporate things, if you will, until those corporate things have a human face. Earlier this week I’ve written about how brands need to stop behaving like brands as well as how a cup of soup had a ton of marketing value while some marketing expenses fell flat.  While I hadn’t really planned out a theme week here on the screed, maybe a reminder each day that we need to speak to our audience transparently, honestly, and in a human voice isn’t a bad thing.  What do you think?

What Not To Wear

I’ve never been known as a fashion plate. In fact, I’ll admit I’ve been challenged in the clothes area over my professional career. However, I am going to write about clothing today because I got on a rant about something with a buddy yesterday and I thought it was good food for thought here on the screed.

One of my pet peeves is the idiots who attend sporting events as if they were playing. You know the ones – you see them at most golf tournaments wearing golf shoes as they walk the course or walking around a tennis tournament in full whites and sneakers. I’m told there are folks showing up at the Olympic dressage events wearing riding boots.  What are these folks thinking?  Someone twists an ankle and you’re in as a competitor?  I’ve been to hundreds of sporting events and yet I don’t think I’ve ever seen this sort of behavior at a football game (sitting in the stands in full pads would probably get you thrown out) or a hockey game (hard to walk the steps in skates).

Putting aside that it’s kind of douchy (that’s really about the most appropriate term ), I suppose that what they’re doing is trying to make a statement that “hey, I’m a golfer/tennis player/rider too and I belong here.”  The reality is that it states exactly the opposite.

An office environment is different.  Most places have some sort of dress code, written or unwritten, and one is best served by adhering to it.  You want to dress like the players, so to speak.  Over the years I’ve gone from wearing three-piece suits every day to wearing a sport coat and tie to losing the tie and jacket.  Here at Ritter Media World Headquarters, we have an even more relaxed dress code but when I visit clients or attend business meetings I try to respect what I believe their dress code will be.  You can’t err by assuming it’s more formal than it turns out to be, and I’m always suprised when I meet third parties with those clients who show up very under-dressed.

Overtime

I’m kind of tired this morning.  I stayed up to watch the first overtime period of a hockey game last night, which turned into a second period and then a third.  In the NHL, playoff overtime periods are the same 20 minute length as a period in a regular game, so it was the equivalent of watching almost a complete second game.  The thing that always strikes me about OT (as overtime is commonly known) is how the players deal with it.  After all, they’re told to put out 100% effort during the game, so what’s left in their tanks if they’re doing that?

It’s a good question for all of us in business.  Then again, we don’t play OT since there’s really no game clock any more.  Overtime is the quaint notion that there is work beyond normal working hours for which we get paid additional money.  Of course, with our “always on” technology, it’s not unusual to receive (and reply to) emails and documents at any hour.  In fact, I’ll bet most of you get antsy if you send a note at any time and don’t receive a reply within an hour.

There are lots of issues here.  The biggest is the same one the players face.  They’ve given everything they have to win during the allotted time and then find out that because they haven’t accomplished the goal they’ve got to continue to give more.  Can they?  These OT games often come down to conditioning and team management – who’s got the fresher legs.  That’s why as managers, we need to make sure our people are pacing themselves since there is no clock in business any more.  Sometimes our best performers will burn themselves out if we don’t make sure they’re turning off the mail and setting the phone to mute, at least on the weekend.

The notion of paying people for overtime work is a fair one yet I don’t know how anyone keeps track.  Business is not just done in the office and burnout can happen anywhere.  There is no clock in business – most of us don’t “punch in” and “punch out.”  As a result, we need to be cognizant that the game might go into OT, the little breaks in between periods of game action won’t be enough to fully recover, and we need to have the stamina to compete.
