The Easy Way Out

Exit 3

Another week, another set of challenges to keep us engaged. Well, that’s one way to look at it anyway. Some of them are holdovers from last week or last month. Some of them might have come anew on the wings of the new week. Some of them might be lurking ominously in the shadows, waiting for the moment we think we’ve got things under control to show themselves.

When each of us is in the throes of a difficult problem, I suppose it’s natural to want a quick, easy solution. Or do we?

I preface this by saying I’m no more a masochist than are you.  That said, I don’t think the quick, easy solution is always what we want.  You see, it’s the tough solutions that force us to think things though in-depth.  When we have to dig deeply to come up with answers, chances are we’ll take the time to uncover the underlying causes of our problem as well as to seek permanent solutions, not band-aids.

Turn on the TV at some off hour when all of the direct response programming is on.  You’ll find out that there are easy ways to stop smoking,  to lose weight, to get six-pack abs (who needs a six-pack – I’ve got a keg!), and make millions in real-estate.  If all of these things were so easy, why do we hear about people (inevitably they’re actually in the aforementioned programs) telling us that they’ve tried every solution and none of them worked.  EXCEPT THIS ONE!  Really!  Really?

Like many of you, I’m finding that losing weight isn’t easy, especially as we get older.  It requires some pretty serious lifestyle changes, not a “three easy payments of $20” DVD.   Many business problems are just like that.  We might think we can find some smart guy writing a blog or a book to tell us how to fix things but the reality is that a deep-dive into the underlying issues is the key to solving them.  That takes time and it’s often not easy but the solutions stick.

What think you?
