Recipes and Business

Many of you will be cooking something for Sunday’s big game and so this Foodie Friday we’ll think a little bit about what recipes to follow.  Actually, it’s more about how one follows any recipe, and what that has in common with business.

As I think you might know, my feeling about cooking is that it’s more like jazz while baking is more Baroque music– far more structured and precise.  Given that, the way I see recipes might differ from how you see them and how that perspective carries into business.  Let’s see.

Catching The Truck

Almost a year ago, I wrote about the cats in our neighborhood and how they chase squirrels with no thought as to what they’re going to do once they catch it.  I had a similar thought this morning as I got yet another company-centric plea to “like us” or “follow us.”  Since part of what I do is to help companies understand, manage, and use social media to further their goals, I’m all for building up the engaged consumer base.  However, that leads to the inevitable question about what happens when the dog catches the mail truck:  once you’ve attracted fans and followers, what happens? The Social Gap

I’m always amused by the dumb things smart people often do.  Today’s bit of amusement comes in the form of an article from eMarketer about how marketers view and use social media.  Now, I’m the first to recognize that business executives (and regular folks too!) often say one thing and do something completely different (and opposite) which is, in retrospect, short-sighted.  However, this piece demonstrates that the gap between recognizing a strategic imperative and acting upon it is pretty wide when it comes to emerging social media.  But let’s see what you think.
