Talk, Don’t Sell

A really interesting piece yesterday on Facebook pages and ads.  GigaOm reported on a study by Campalyst concerning user engagement on Facebook which you can find here.  We’ve talked a lot about how you and I wouldn’t have a conversation in the real world in which I am constantly selling you stuff and this research serves to confirm that it’s more effective if advertisers don’t conduct themselves online any differently.  In my mind, it points to one things that will make fan pages – or any other digital executions – successful is delivering great, engaging content.

What’s A Friend Worth?

Ask yourself this about your best friend:  what is he or she worth to you?  I know –  silly question.  After all, our friends don’t really have monetary value.  What they provide is measured in emotional support, perhaps a more varied perspective on the world around you, and maybe a great system of checks and balances with your own perception of you and the worlds around you.

I got to thinking about the fallacy of measuring a friend’s worth as I read an article last week on a marketing study.  In my mind, social media in many forms isn’t about the traditional measures of ROI.  After all, if the point is to engage people in conversations, much as with one’s own friends, the ROI isn’t really quantifiable in traditional terms.  But let’s see what you think. Looking Past Preconceptions

Let’s play a little marketing game this morning.  I’ll throw out a series of facts and you put on your marketing hat and decide if the facts make you want to target this group.  The point I’m going to make is that the answers may surprise you, not because you will find them unbelievable but because I’m betting that you have some preconceptions which will skew your thinking.  As we’ve discussed before, I think that is a huge problem in business (and in life and political thought as well!).
