Our Own Private Idahos

Happy TunesDay!  For our musical subject today, let’s listen to the B52’s.  It’s OK to get up and dance – I’ll wait:

I got to thinking about that phrase and our own private Idaho‘s the other day.  On one level it’s about someone who is wrapped up in their own narrow frame of reference.  They create their own little world and exclude anything outside of its borders.  Maybe that thinking was what inspired yesterday’s post on TV and social.  I do know that it was a bit of synchronicity (not the song!) when I came across an article in the NY Times magazine about popularity that made the point about the continuing segmentation of culture very well.

The piece, entitled What It Means to Be Popular (When Everything Is Popular) sums it up well:

This refraction of the culture into ever-smaller slivers leaves us instinctively with a sense of something lost. Once we listened to the same song together, watched the same show together, argued over the same movies together. Now we’re each focused on our own screen, listening to our own playlist, we’re bowling alone, etc. A landscape that once featured a few unavoidable monoliths of popularity is now dotted with a multitude of lesser monuments, too many to keep track of, let alone celebrate.

I think this creates opportunities for those of us in business along with the obvious difficulties, the ability to scale being the largest problem.   Perhaps we need to be thinking about deep engagement in a series of micro-audiences as opposed to the mass reach everyone seems to desire?  Rather than thinking about going viral (which to me is top-down thinking), maybe we should recognize that there are too many different Idaho’s for that to occur with any regularity and focus instead in creating something for several of them which each of them can serve within their own borders (bottom-up).

When I was a kid there were three television networks and the roster of programs was pretty limited.  The lowest rated shows then would be huge hits now.  That’s not a function of their quality, it’s just that there weren’t any other choices.  Today’s choices are unlimited. “Popular” means someone – anyone – is paying attention.  We need to run our businesses around that definition of popular and build a business model that works, throwing away “old” models in the process.

You Don’t Have To Cry

Today is TunesDay and so it’s into the world of music for a little business insight. I was driving the other day and one of “those” songs came on. You know them – tunes you adore and can’t get out of your head but you never hear much any more. It was Crosby, Stills, & Nash‘s “You Don’t Have To Cry,” which they will tell you is the first song they ever sang together. Its harmonies are the personification of ethereal and it’s a lesson in blending individuals into a unit. But that’s not our topic today!

First, have a listen:

Here are the words that spoke to me:

Are you thinkin’ of telephones
And managers and where you got to be at noon?

You are living a reality
I left years ago, it quite nearly killed me
In the long run it will make you cry
Make you crazy and old before your time
And the difference between me and you
I won’t argue right or wrong but I have time to cry my baby

Having lived the life of telephones and noon meetings, I can tell you that it is a reality that can kill you.  The business point today is that we all need to find that “time to cry” or laugh or sing or do whatever returns our breathing to normal and our frenetic brains to a state of calm.  It’s harder now.  Mobile devices are always at our sides (or on our heads and wrists!) and the pressure to participate in the social stream that engulfs your friends and family is big.   Something is “always on” and pleading for our attention.

It’s not easy to disconnect – maybe impossible other than in limited doses.  But unless “crazy and old” is your objective, you need to find that figurative time to cry, even in brief segments.  That’s how our business lives remain what we do to live and not who we are.  You with me?

The Moment In Between

Our TunesDay thought today is courtesy of The Grateful Dead (no shock there). Before I get to it, I’m wondering if you’ve ever taken a ride on a roller coaster? If you have, there’s always the moment when the cars are done climbing and before you plunge down that first drop.  It always seems very quiet to me – a pause to collect yourself.  Those moments in between exist in music as well, and today I want to talk about one of my favorites.

Sugar Magnolia was a staple of the Dead’s repertoire for nearly their entire existence.   In fact, it was played more often in concert than any other song they performed save for one.  The song had a coda called “Sunshine Daydream” that the band often used as jumping off point for a jam or for vocal histrionics.  There was always a moment in between the song itself and the coda.  While the topics of our TunesDay screens are the songs themselves, today I want to call your attention to that moment.

What was intriguing about the moment is that you never knew how long it would last.  Sometimes it was a second, sometimes it would last until the end of the next set when the band, having played a dozen other songs, would pick back up with Sunshine Daydream.  The longest it ever lasted was a week – in between two concerts held to memorialize Bill Graham.  For me it’s a time to enjoy the brief silence, to collect myself (the pause always followed a raucous jam) for what’s to come next.

I think we need more moments like that in our business lives.  We careen from one project to the next barely pausing to savor what we’ve done.  Taking a moment DURING the project – that brief pause before we hit the coda – can make a huge difference.  A breath before the daily roller coaster plunges forward, if you will.  Silence in negotiating can change a dynamic and turn a deal around.  Silence is a stillness that we all need at some point.  The silence in music allows all the other dynamics to hit the listener more forcefully.  The coda from The Dead always did the same.  Maybe that moment in between is worth a try?
