Here we are at Friday again so it’s time for a few thoughts on food. Actually, I rarely need to be prompted to talk about food – it’s on my mind a lot. So much so that I really need to lose some weight. I’m willing to bet that many of you are in the same boat. Maybe it’s that we don’t think of food enough – we just stick it in the old pie-hole and it shows up on our waists soon thereafter.
In any event, of course I somehow got my weight thoughts tracking over to business. Let me explain.
We all know that overeating – too much food – is bad for us. Sure, on occasion we indulge, but if we do so on a daily basis all kinds of bad things happen – weight gain, various nasty diseases, and often early death. Not so good.
Did you ever think, however, that over-businessing – too much business – can have the same effect? Obviously I don’t mean “too much” in the sense that business is really good and you need to grow to support all your customers. What I mean is that there are folks who can’t push away from the business table to rest. They do email while they’re eating. They send lengthy notes while they’re supposed to be on vacation. They’re never “off.”
They’re going to experience a weight gain of sorts as well. The weighty stress of never letting up can have many of the same effects as gaining 25 pounds – it strains your heart, raises your blood pressure, and maybe even leads to the over-indulgences of the other kind.
This seems like a good thought for us as we approach the weekend, a time when we give business a rest and focus on other things that make us happy. Like food!
Enjoy losing the weight of business for a few days.
