I’ve been traveling so this will be a quick end of week post. A year ago, I went through some major changes in my life which began a year ago tomorrow. I’ve discovered an awful lot about myself but also the answer to this quiz:
Once you retire, which of the following is likely to have the biggest effect on your happiness?
a) The size of your nest egg
b) Your blood pressure
c) The number of people who come to your birthday party
d) A hole in one at Augusta National Golf Club
Answer: (c) The number of people who come to your birthday party.
Turns out, friends are better than gold. A University of Michigan study found that the biggest effect on well-being comes from the size of a retiree’s social network. It outweighs even health and money. Those with 16 good pals are, on average, far more satisfied with life than those with 10 friends or less.
Amen to that. If you got ’em, let them know you care. If you don’t, well, we’re in the midst of the greatest socialization process in history. Get busy!

I’m sorry that I didn’t go to your birthday party and I’m sorry that you didn’t get a hole in one at Augusta but I still love you.
