Shooting The Messenger

One of the things I discuss fairly often with clients is measurement.  We chat about things such as “What do we measure”, “why do we measure it”, and “what constitutes success.”  As you might imagine, with every marketing dollar being scrutinized (rightfully so), figuring out ROI is job one for folks like me who are gone with the wind if the results aren’t there.

Well, sometimes the results aren’t there, despite the best efforts of everyone involved.  I’ve always felt that marketing, and digital marketing in particular, is a process of continuous improvement rather than a series of one-time events.  However, that view isn’t always shared, especially in light of “fix it NOW” thinking on some senior management‘s part.  That’s short-sighted and misdirected in my book.  Let me explain. Naming Rights

What’s in a name?  Shakespeare pondered that centuries ago and figured out that the thing would smell as sweet no matter what we called it (and don’t ask me to quote the rest of Romeo and Juliet – not one of my favorites).

That quote came to mind this morning as I read a piece on the battle over two spas’ use of the same name.  They’re thousands of miles apart; they don’t draw the same clientele, yet they’re in court over the dispute.  The point? Continue reading

So Long Mobil

The very first credit card I acquired was from Mobil Oil.  They offered one to college seniors and I had a car.  I’ve had the card ever since (and that’s 35 years for those of you counting).  My father-in-law actually worked for a division of Mobil for at least that long as well, so there’s a definite reason to be loyal to that brand.

I like to think my family is the kind of customer a gasoline company would want – four cars, a fair amount of driving out here in the suburbs.  So what happened over the weekend which cost them our business is kind of weird.  But I’ll let you judge. Continue reading
