The Shrinking Universe

I know I sometimes get a bit “out there” with some of these posts.  Today might be one of those but hopefully you find the tidbit I’m about to discuss as interesting as I do.

Those of you who are outside of the media business might not be aware that Nielsen, the ratings company, updates what are called “universe estimates” every year.  This is to reflect the growth in households and of the numbers of people who live in them.  Those ratings you see reported are percentages of a universe – a 10 rating means 10% of what’s being measured – homes, Men, Women 18-34 – was watching.  Percentages are constant; universes aren’t, and this is where it gets interesting.  Let’s see what you think. Inquiring Minds

Since I try to write a little something each weekday, you might have noticed that I burn through a lot of topics. One thing I do is to clip articles that provoke a thought (although frankly I’d like it if you guys would send me more topic suggestions – hint hint).
A story I clipped back in December had to do with the release of a study by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press about how much of a factual grasp we all have of basic facts with respect to current events. Let’s see if your reaction is the same as mine. Continue reading

The Label

I know you were hoping I’d write about the food at the Royal Wedding this morning but since my invitation got lost in the mail I have no basis upon which to comment. Not that I’ve ever let that stand in my way before. I do have experience with food shopping, however, and I read a lot of labels as I do so. Those labels – and the packages on which they reside – are today’s food thought and of course it ties into business – and just maybe your health – as well. Continue reading
