Are You A Snowman Or A Firefighter?

We had some snow here last weekend and as I drove around afterwards I saw a number of snowmen.  With the warmer weather this past week, many of them are gone now, victims of the rain and warmth.  Those that remain don’t look as they did when the conditions were optimal.  This, of course, triggered a business thought and a question we all might ask ourselves.

I’ve known a bunch of snowmen in business.  These are people who look terrific under optimal conditions but who melt away as soon as conditions change.  You know the types.  They’re the people who are standing tall when the presentation went well or sales are flowing.  As soon as things get a little warm – business takes a downturn, the boss is angry about something – they get a lot smaller.  Maybe they even fade away completely.  They can’t deal with changing or sub-optimal conditions.

Contrast a snow person’s (why limit this to men!) behavior with that of the firefighters among us.  These are the people who, when things are turning bad, run to the problem.  They ask “how can I help?”, not “where can I hide?”.   The next time an alarm goes off in your business life, part of handling the crisis ought to be taking note of who melts, who waits to be rescued, and who rushes at the problem.  The last group is the keepers.

Snowmen are fun to build but a disaster to have around the office.  Give me firefighters every time.  You?

Skin In The Game

As part of the mix of services I provide to clients, sometimes I write RFPs and evaluate the responses in order to select the top couple of potential vendors.  It’s not all that different from what I used to do in a previous life.  Hardly a day went by that some new company asked for a meeting in order to pitch the latest and greatest piece of technology or a service that was going to increase my group’s revenues dramatically.  Then and now, the conversation turns to the business model:  how are the two organizations to work together, where does money change hands, and what accountability do we have to one another?

It was usually during that part of the discussion that there was a “tell”, as poker players call it – the thing that gives away how good a hand you’re playing.  For me, this tell was always about how much skin the company had in the game, and to this day I think it’s an important factor in evaluating partnerships. What We Can Learn From A Blimpie

We’ll end the week with a Foodie Friday thought from the good folks at Blimpie.  Actually, the sandwich that prompted the thought is from them:  the thought itself comes from me.  The sandwich in question is the Blimpie Special Vegetarian 12 inch sub, which began as an off the menu item but is now part of their culinary repertoire.  I’ll say upfront that I have no particular beef (no pun intended) with Blimpie.  I used to eat their sandwiches all the time and one of the great joys of my youth was grabbing the biggest Blimpie combo I could buy and going to watch a basketball game.
