I’ve got rain on the brain today so nothing food-related for this Friday. Sorry! But it’s been raining for almost 48 hours and while the conditions here are better than those further south, it’s still pretty wet. The power went off and on a couple of times and there are trees down all over the place.
That said, I saw something this morning that happened because of the rain and it inspired a thought.
The Summer has been unbelievably hot and dry, so much so that the evergreen trees were shutting down. They were turning yellow and I thought we might be losing them. All the other trees were turning as well although I kind of wrote that off to the change of seasons beginning. But I’d never seen the evergreens do this.
When I looked out the window a few minutes ago, that had changed. The evergreens – in fact, all the trees – were back to being green. The horrible rain and wind had revived them and that made me think about how we tend to think of rain and maybe why we’re wrong.
“Into each life a little rain must fall.” How many times have you heard that? Generally it’s taken to mean something bad has happened or some new adversity has popped up. But maybe we’re wrong. Maybe like the evergreens the adversity is exactly what we need to revive us. You may be in a job you hate or your business is having a crisis and think the clouds all around you portend something ominous. Maybe it’s exactly the storm you need. In fact, when the trees or golf courses or your personal or professional life is slowly changing for the worse, maybe we ought to pray for rain – a huge storm – to bring everything back to life.
Like many of you, I’ve been through a few storms these last few years. Who hasn’t? But although some trees around here have fallen the ones that have survived are healthier and that’s true of most of us, right? So here’s to the rain and to the greenery that follows.
Any thoughts? Other than getting into someplace dry and something wet? Enjoy!
