I love connecting. I love that technology makes staying in touch and up to date so easy. I think it’s great that years and miles melt away at the touch of a “send” or “post” button. I just want to add one thing for you to keep in mind as you do so: shut up. OK, so maybe that’s a bit harsh, but here’s what I mean – think before you hit that button because I’m not so sure all of us do.
How much useless information do you really need each day when I’m sure you’re overloaded by stuff you really do care about? If any of you are members of a LinkedIn group, in theory a place for like-minded professionals to share information, you know what I mean. Much of what’s there is spam of one sort or another, even if the poster isn’t selling something. Twitter is even worse. I’ve taken to losing those folks who have automated feeds to Twitter – how much new, useful information can you provide every hour? I think an inspirational quote is a lovely thing if it has relevance to something going on in your life but out of context it’s just more noise.
We’re supposed to be conversing. If it’s a monologue on your part, maybe no one is listening? What are others taking about and how are you adding to that conversation? I’ve hidden more updates from games and other apps on Facebook than I care to count. I’m happy you’ve killed off a rival family in Mafia Wars but honestly, I don’t need to know about it. Foursquare is a little different although why do you always want the world to know you’re at the post office? Are you thinking you’ll meet a bunch of folks there and hang out?
So please follow me and connect with me – I do want to hear what you have to say and I promise I won’t send out too much drivel (OK, maybe on the weekend when we’re all a bit less busy). It won’t be too much information, I promise, and hopefully some of it will be useful. Can you say the same?
Am I way out of line here?
