Don’t Know Much About History

The NBC Nightly News had a report last night about kids and their knowledge of American history.  Anyone who cares about either education or history would find the report disturbing and this AP article reported on the same facts:

Just 13 percent of high school seniors who took the 2010 National Assessment of Educational Progress — called the Nation’s Report Card — showed solid academic performance in American history. The two other grade levels tested didn’t perform much better, with just 22 percent of fourth-grade students and 18 percent of eighth-graders scoring proficient or better.

Better Late Than Never

Isn’t it nice when the lights go on in a CEO’s brain? It’s even better when what those lights illuminate is a point so simple that even dimwits like me got it quite a while ago. That happened the other day and I almost drove off the road when I heard the report on the radio (yep, I still listen to good old news radio even if it’s side by side with the newer satellite flavor).

The Label

I know you were hoping I’d write about the food at the Royal Wedding this morning but since my invitation got lost in the mail I have no basis upon which to comment. Not that I’ve ever let that stand in my way before. I do have experience with food shopping, however, and I read a lot of labels as I do so. Those labels – and the packages on which they reside – are today’s food thought and of course it ties into business – and just maybe your health – as well. Continue reading
