Here Is A Great Lesson On Conversing

I use this space to complain from time to time (I know, you hadn’t noticed).  One of the targets of my screed is PR folks who send out emails requesting I interview and write about whatever person they’re pushing even if those people have nothing to do with what I write about.  In just the last few days (based on what I can find in my Trash folder), I’ve received offers to write (along with a press release and interview contact information) about a new system that eliminates fat cells in problem areas, without surgery or downtime, with the use of high intensity, focused ultrasound waves.  I got another from a press guy who has a client that’s a businessperson who believes that today’s tough economy may just be the best thing that’s happened to America in a long time (we’re focusing less on things and more on faith).  Others come from an email address that is supposed to be a person but is signed by “account #6” (oops).  There are several others.

Which is why this note was so refreshing (and why I’m giving them some props).

Our group( www.northof41.org ) has rented a bar for the entire weekend starting at 5:30pm on March 9th . We are inviting all bloggers and media representatives to use our space to re-charge your laptop, grab a bite to eat or stop in for a drink. At the venue, we also have meeting space set aside so you can have a quiet place in which to do interviews. In addition, we have free wi-fi throughout the venue. We have rented the (I’m redacting this) which is a short 30 second walk from the Convention Center.  Let me know if you are interested in some more information or if you have any questions.  We look forward to seeing you in Austin during SxSW Interactive.

Hey!  No “interview our person NOW” pitch.  No press release, free books, or anything off target.  Just a “if you’re going to be around and need a place to crash or recharge, we’re here for you.”  That, dear readers, is how it’s done, and is a great example to any company thinking about using or currently using social media.  It’s a conversation – there is another person involved.  It’s not about you and your agenda.  It’s about being helpful and humble.  Think I’ll be more receptive to whatever they have to say down the road?  Wouldn’t you be?
