Shrink The Joint

If you’ve been following along in this space you know that one of my favorite artists is The Boss.  I’ve seen him many time over the last (gulp) forty years (honest – the first time was 1972) in venues ranging from a few thousand seats to very large stadia.   I’ve seen him with the E-Street Band, as a solo artist with another band, and even all by himself doing a one-man show.  The music is always great but there was something else that hit me about all of those shows that reminded me of a business point this morning.

In every one of those venues, Bruce managed to make the room seem smaller, more intimate.  It was as if he tried to shrink the room to be a small space where only you and he existed.  Of course, his shows are often more party than one on one conversations, but if you’ve ever hung out at a gathering with a close friend, even though there are dozens of people around you it feels as if you’re on your own island.

When I give presentations or sit on panels, I keep Bruce in mind.  The goal is to connect with each person in the audience.  I usually try to do that by telling a story, not by making a speech.  Eye contact is also important, which is why I’m not a huge fan of presenting in dark rooms.  I’ve written before about not reading off walls.  I’m a believer in being prepared which means you should have done your homework and have some notes, whether it’s a presentation, a panel, or an interview.

Managing people follows the same principle.  Everyone wants to feel connected, even in a group setting.  Treating each person as an individual – taking the time to get to know them as more than “employees” – helps to make that connection possible.  It shrinks the room by removing the space between you.

Ultimately, great managers and great presenters leave you wanting more, just as I’ll keep seeing Bruce for as long as he and I can schlep our ancient butts to whatever venue he chooses, big or small.  After all, it’s just he and I there anyway.

Who do you know that shrinks the joint?
