That’s right – Foodie Fun Friday is back and today it’s with a question – are you a fruit or a vegetable? No, this is not some veiled “don’t ask, don’t tell” thing but more a question about your approach to the world, business included. Maybe I should be asking about the color of your parachute?
Technically speaking, the main difference between fruits and vegetables is that a fruit is a ripened ovary (I hear the wincing) while a vegetable is a herbaceous plant cultivated for its edible parts. Technically, things like tomatoes, corn and peppers are fruits while lettuce, broccoli and potatoes are veggies. However, I ask because I always think the main difference has to do with what you can tell about a fruit or veggie by looking.
We tend to think of fruits and sweet while veggies aren’t. But to me, it’s about transparency. It’s very hard to tell if many fruits are ripe and sweet just by looking while it’s easier to pick out a good veggie to eat. Oh sure, smell the end of a melon and if it’s heavy for its size it’s probably ripe and delicious, but there is judgment involved – what does “for its size” mean anyway? We KNOW what bad broccoli looks like – yellow, the buds are opening – but how can you tell if a tomato is mealy from the outside?
So which one does your business style make you- a fruit or a veggie? Something to ponder this winter weekend! Let me know what you figure out.
